Explication Essay

If your teacher requires you to write an essay that is unfamiliar, it is not at all surprising if you get intimidated. Most students become so nervous when they hear something that is new to their senses. In such cases, all you need to do is to understand carefully what is required of you to do and learn how you can do it. We have one very good example of this very new type of essay; we call it an explication essay. Probably other students have heard of this term before but if this is new to you, we will give you an idea how to write it. An explication essay has only one goal; it is to find more meaning out of a literature text. You are going to scratch more ideas and meanings beneath the surface of a literary work to discover what the author wants you to understand. Writing an explication essay involves following a certain format of writing, which will analyze the parts of literary works. Usually, undergraduate and gradate students in college write such an essay. However, some high school students may need to write them if they are to take advanced placement programs.

Now that you know what an explication essay is, the next step for you is to learn how to write it.

First, you should carefully read the literary piece given to you; it can be a poem, a play, novel or a short essay. We recommend that you read the material several times, so you can get its full meaning as presented by the author. Try to understand first the elements of the material, which may include the setting, the characters or the plot. You can start making assumptions on the real motive of the author in writing the material. There is nothing to worry about if you still cannot fully prove the assumption you made. This is where explication comes because it is your opinion that matters.

Second, you can start targeting the sentences and use of words in the material. You may partition the sentences and parts and write your interpretations on a separate sheet of paper. Do this in all important segments of the literary work that you think stand out from the rest. Discuss why you have selected such parts and use them to support your main thesis statement.

Lastly, discuss the main thesis statement and relate the different parts to compose a unifying idea of the material’s main point. Explain your stand on the literary work and talk about what it really wants to convey to the readers. You may simply compare the explications to some real world situations and feelings such as war and conflict, love, anxiety or happiness. Remember, you have to provide your interpretation on a literary work and convey the real meaning of it based on how you analyze its parts. Now, you have written an explication essay.
